Astral Projection in The Butterfly Effect

Directors Eric Bress and Mackye Gruber teamed up to direct The Butterfly effect, a sci-fi thriller that hit theaters back in 2004. Evan (Ashton Kutcher) lived a troublesome childhood that he suppressed to function in society.

However, a special notebook enables Evan to astral project in time to fix his bad children memories. It is something that most people want to do to avoid thinking of such bad memories when stress surfaces in their latter adult years.

Evan focuses on journal pages in a composition book to transcend time and space. Every time Evan changes the past, he astral projects back into the present to experience complications. The symbolism in The Butterfly Effect is that changing the past may have a negative impact on the future.

Astral projection in The Butterfly Effect is viewed as astral time travel. Evan moves about time to fix what he thinks are his worst childhood experiences. Thus, manipulating the element of time affects the people closest to him.

As Evan attempts to change the past, he returns to a future that forgets his true self. His soulmate Kayleigh (Amy Smart) is put smack in the middle of Evan's need to improve her life and his.

Astral projection is essentially the main theme in The Butterfly Effect. Evan astral projects through time throughout the course of the movie. He then realizes he must make a decision to end his astral projection binges to protect the people he loves most.

If you never watched The Butterfly Effect, I recommend you rent the movie at Netflix or maybe check it out out at RedBox. The Butterfly Effect enables moviegoers to watch astral projection in motion.

As an adult, Evan knowingly realizes he is transcending time in his astral form as a child. When Evan astral projects, he has complete control of the astral worlds disguised as past events.

While astral projection is never mentioned in the movie as it is in Insidious, the screenwriters and directors manage to do a fascinating job employing the astral projection concept into action, showing that time is better left unchanged. Thanks for reading.
