Do you find yourself working while sleeping? Do you wake up tired? You might be having the job dream.
The job dream is the classic sign of being overworked at your job. I used to have the job dream while working as a medical technician in the Air Force. Moreover, the job dream resurfaced again in a serving job at various restaurants. I lacked mental and physical energy. These jobs caused a ton of stress.
According to Kosarin (2005), "Dreaming that you are at work may indicate you're overworked, you're deeply focused on some aspect of your job, or you want to work harder and achieve more" (p. 240). The job dream symbol interprets your job is stressful, you want to contribute more, and that you're concentrating too much on one job duty or responsibility.
Why is the job dream significant? The job dream alerted me to leave the military in the late 90's. The Air Force and hospital tasks overworked my body and mind, causing severe burnout. While in college, the serving jobs introduced physical and mental burnout due to restaurants lacking leadership and teamwork.
Essentially, you would have to work under stressful conditions to provide quality customer service. I would dream about serving 20 tables. Every customer requested special instructions. No managers or servers offered to help me handle this massive flow of customers. The manager under ordered restaurant supplies. Besides the 20 tables, the dream is reminiscent of my real life experience.
In the medical job dreams, I would have 30 patient rooms. Patients demanded full-care. The call bell kept going off. Ironically, I experienced a massive influx of patients when medical technicians called-in sick. I had 30 patients under my care. I had to start IVs. check vital signs every few hours, use the bedpan on several patients, check glucose levels, draw blood, and clean patients. The constant stress in the military hospital setting made me feel like a zombie.
The job dream will dissipate once you leave your job. In my honest opinion, the job dream interpretation suggests your job is overworking your body and mind. It is likely a job you dislike. Therefore, the recurring job dream will continue to persist until you make a decision to leave your dream or to reduce your role to decrease your stress. If you have the job dream, I advice you to make quick changes right away to maintain your sanity.
